This week the spotlight is on a Young Jane in Los Angeles, California from 1989
She was just a baby when she died, and it's difficult to imagine that 30 years have gone by without someone stepping up to identify her. At the risk of sounding critical of law enforcement's efforts (or lack thereof), many young Hispanic, African American, and Native American girls have gone missing and/or unidentified for decades after lackluster investigations or families' concerns being dismissed. Could her family have gone to report her missing, met only with disinterest from police? Was the investigation into her death over before it truly began, with authorities assuming the worst of her and allowing her case to be swept under the rug? Or was the investigation taken seriously, all stones overturned, and authorities were genuinely out of leads? I can't say one way or the other, but I hope the latter is more accurate. What We KnowHispanic 12 - 15 years old 5' 3" & 124 lbs Dark brown to black hair, shoulder length Brown eyes Tattoos, likely homemade. Front of the right thigh, a patterned oval-diamond with lettering beneath it that's very difficult to read Her teeth were natural, with no fillings Clothing She wore a bright blue shirt with the words "Somebody in California Loves Me" on the front, faded blue/black jeans, a beige bra, green or white panties, white socks with red trim and black shoes Jewelry A white-metal ring with lion head; white metal ring with green stone; heart shape yellow-metal ring; yellow metal I.D. bracelet; yellow metal chain; yellow metal chain with charms of a heart, rose & a St. Christopher medal; yellow metal ear stud with a charm; yellow metal earring stud with a clear stone
Despite efforts of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and sleuths far and wide, this young girl remains unidentified. Unfortunately, she joined the sisterhood of the Janes in 1989, but there are those of us who continue to believe that she will, someday, be reunited with her name, her story, and those who loved her.
